When King Stephanus takes a new bride, he has no idea what he's in for. The new queen loves him, but is afraid to tell him she can't have children. Meeting with a kind old woman, (who is secretly an angel), the queen learns a way to have children. When she ignores the directions given to her however, mayhem ensues. The elderly woman promised a child who's beauty, both inside and out, would be world renowned, but due to the queen not doing as she was told, she bears an ugly child, born with a tuft of dark straw-like hair and ashen skin. Feeling horribly misled by the old woman, the queen neglects the new baby. Given tatters to wear by the serving class, the child becomes known throughout the palace as "TatterHood" and she runs the halls from the back of a donkey, banging about with a wooden spoon. When the king returns and discovers that his wife has neglected his daughter, he means to be rid of her, but as she is again with child, he hasn't the heart. The new child is everything they'd hoped for. The queen is excited to be her mother, but thanks to the baby's love of her sister, is deservingly stuck having to deal with TatterHood as well, since the girls will not be parted. Growing into a young woman, TatterHood notices commotion in the tower that turns out to be a coven. Thinking they might harm her sister, she dispenses with the witches, but not before one of them trades a cow's head for her sister Berenice's and is off with it. The angel reappears to TatterHood this time and tells her how to get her sister's head back, but it requires the girls to go on a long voyage alone. After many years, the young women have replaced Berenice's head, and are about to embark on an adventure all their own in a far away kingdom. With their father passed away and their mother ruling at home, there is no need to return. TatterHood must brave ocean waters, a wild bear, and a number of other challenges to keep them safe. The real question though, is how long will she be able to keep the witches from finding them, and seeking retribution?
