Luke Lucas was born under a bad moon. That's the only way he could figure it - that his lot in life had him tagged for anguish, tragedy, and bad luck - a lonely existence, more self-imposed than not. At the age of seventy-two, however, Luke has an epiphany triggered by a showdown with a con artist, who has two innocent honeymooners within his clutches. The incident, from fifty years earlier, prompted him to make a run for it, from Cleveland to his present home in Miami Beach, and to remain on the lam for his entire adult life.
Luke is persuaded to atone for his past and he takes solace in the idea of facing the consequences and turning himself in to the authorities. He makes the move northbound and finds himself thrust into a date with destiny, as others on his improbable trek become part of the story and his eyes are opened to revelations that he could never have imagined.
What Luke finds at the end of his journey is nothing short of a miraculous discovery - of newfound riches, shared bonds and lives altered by missed connections. Luke assumes the role as a protector, but will he be able to insert himself when he's most needed - before the frailties of old age take their toll?
