This "hybrid" bible was a work in progress, with the New Testament being a fresh translation of the Clementine Vulgate, published in 1941. Those early versions used the classic Douay Old Testament, combined with the 1941 Confraternity New Testament. I like the difference in language, as it gives you a hint of which testament you are reading - in case you forget! As the years passed, fresh translations of various books of the Old Testament were included. Sadly, the work on the mediocre 1970 "New American Bible" (NAB) stopped the Confraternity in 1969 from ever being completed under one cover.
Typical Confraternity footnotes and book introductions are solid, confidence-inspiring and 100% Catholic, with none of the nonsensical footnotes that can be seen in the 1970 and later NAB and NABRE. The bibles from the 1940s and 1950s had a classic appearance, but the covers become rather ugly during the 1960s. However, the content is just as good, if you don't mind the cover. A nice but ugly bible would merit re-binding, I would think.
Another plus is that every Confraternity bible has the "Prayer to the Holy Spirit before reading the Holy Scriptures" printed toward the front of the book. I truly wonder why this prayer was removed from the NAB and NABRE.
Very highly recommended bible.
