Germaine was born deformed and unloved. But this didn't stop the child from growing into a beautiful soul. Her dear mother passed away soon after her birth and later a stepmother did nothing but continuously abused her. She turned her father and siblings against her and forbad Germaine to live and eat with them in fear that her birth defects may be catching. So the wee child moved into the barn where she was more than welcomed by the animals who, not only kept her warm at night but gave her the love all children need. She ate but scraps from the family's table. And though they were sparse, she always shared them with the village Poor. As Germaine grew, the villagers saw how kind she was and began to welcome her friendship. They learned to love her and began badgering her father for allowing his wife to have abused her. He asked Germaine's forgiveness and invited her to return to the house. But she was too happy in the barn where she chose to stay throughout her life. Her farm duties kept her busy but she always found time for daily walks to the church where she learned the real meaning of God's love. She blossomed into the village's jewel! And not once did she ever say a cruel word to anyone who mistreated her and called her terrible names. She knew that people were afraid of her ugliness. But she'd always smile. And it was her gift of smiling and many acts of kindness that turned her family and villagers into the truest friends she could have ever dreamed!
