Saigon Tea is a romantic drama about two very different people who meet, under less-than-ideal circumstances, and are drawn together. The story takes place during the last days of the American involvement with the Vietnam War and moves to the post-war life in the United States in the mid to late seventies. However, when one man takes it upon himself to change the fate of MyLee and Sean, he sends them spinning into separate paths. Parts of Saigon Tea is semi-autobiographical, but the entire story is a testament to how determined the sprit of two truly devoted people can be and how life can prevail, even after one of them has to make a supreme sacrifice. The author, Ken Knipple, spent nearly three years on the rivers in Vietnam, from Oct 1967 to Dec 1970, and was wounded during his last tour, that is when he met the heroine of the story, MyLee. The arch villain in the story takes on his own role in their lives, but is fictional. It is a bittersweet romance with a different kind of ending.Saigon Tea is Ken Knipple's third book, and arguably his best. Green Eyes was a romantic drama also, while Wildcards was pure adventure. His writing style is uniquely his and he is a captivating storyteller, weaving a web that consumes the lives of these realistic characters.
