A widowed Icelandic physicist, whose "close" brush with Nobel fame has passed, is ready to retire when Crave Chemical offers him his own university laboratory. With no family tying him to his spartan European existence, Saevar settles in to a very foreign Manhattan, with electronic taxis, computerized landlords, gypsies with addictions, and more trees than he expected.
