My spiritual journey from the cradle of the very conservative Church of the Brethren to the altars of the liberal and progressive Episcopal Church is similar to Sadie's awakening about matters of faith. In reading the books she cherished and read, I have found a kinship that inspired this book. As I researched the life of my Grandmother, Sadie, excepting oral family history, a few of her favorite books, and some of her personal letters, practically nothing was known or had been written about this remarkable woman. Like so many women of her era, she lived in the shadow of the famous men in her life. Her father, Michael Zigler, was responsible for establishing the first Sunday Schools at the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren. Her brother, Robert (M.R.) Zigler, became a world-renowned Peace Activist. Her husband, Charles W. Wampler, became "The Father of the Modern Turkey Industry. As men, their stories and legacies have survived. I was determined that Sadie's story would also be told and remembered.
