Kathleen McGwin is a wise woman. Few novelists have so capably captured the complexity of human interaction within the context of a social/cultural system, and done it with such tenderness and empathy for the human condition. What a treat to travel with Sadie as she reclaims her dignity, her integrity, her strength, her talents, and her self confidence, things she'd lost in one context, and regained in another. What a treat it was to travel with Sadie and her endearing companions as she took on a bully against all odds. What a treat it was to watch Sadie and her wheelchair bound neighbor, her landlady and her landlady's handsome son, her own son, and her co-workers develop honest caring relationships. McGwin's action scenes kept me on edge, gasping here, anxious there, cheering here, mourning there, sometimes feeling utterly helpless. But, she held nothing back. She didn't rescue me with platitudes, cliché's or religious proselytizing. This is a gutsy novel about real people and real life circumstances. There were some repetitions and descriptive passages seemed longer than they needed to be. Kathleen is a poet, and I'm not fond of poetry. There were times when the read dragged a bit for me. The key words here are "a bit" and "for me". Whether you are a poet or not, don't let my minor bias keep you from this incredibly gutsy novel.
