Huey P. Newton was born on February 17, 1942, in Monroe, Louisiana. He was a political activist and co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. The organization was originally formed to patrol African American neighborhoods to protect residents from acts of police brutality. He died on August 22, 1989, at the age of 47.
