A voice so true, I could not put this book down!

I bought this book on the strength of it's opening paragraph, and I have never been so moved by the absolute TRUTHFULNESS of an author's voice and tone. David Hill is a white man who writes the character of black women with such accuracy, and such respect and honesty as to be astonishing. I brought this book with me on vacation, expecting to enjoy it all week, and finished it in one day, ignoring my family, the scenery and everything else around me, and then I wept, sighed the contented sigh of one who has been completely and wonderfully nourished, then I read it again! Read this book, you will love it; David Hill is a master.

It is an insightful viewing of Southern lore and truth.

David Hill is one who knows the mind and soul of the Southerner. His book depicts the heart of man and woman as though he was both of them. His characters are touchable and ones with whom a person of the book's venue can easily identify. The plot is as anectdotal as the family next door. Hill's readable insights hold a certain mystery of outcome that are partially revealed at the end of the work. The book is superb as a good novel should be written. His next work will be better.

Most Moving since Prince of Tides

As a bookstore manager, I head the pleasure of reading this astonishing novel in an advance copy, an experience that motivated me to recommend the book every time I was asked "what is good?" As a native Southerner, Hill evoked in me the real power of contemporary racisim by way of characters who could, and do, inhabit every Southern community. Structurally, I think that no one since Faulkner has been so adept at multiple narraration. This is the finest work I have read in years

Wonderfully written, compelling, great character development

We got this book at the library and loved it so much we have recommended it to all of our friends who read, and some who don't. The characters were so well developed you felt like you knew them. I was astonished that a man could write the strong, lead women characters so well. Great book
