Third, she uncovers a betrayal committed by Great Aunt Hannah on a family member that breaks her spirit; this betrayal is a secret Great Aunt Hannah never wanted known. And fourth, Vett falls in love with Lt. Ellison, the sheriff investigator assigned to the case. Vett struggles with her desire to keep from him the discoveries and headways she makes. She fears he will order her to stop her investigation if she tells him.

If the murder does not get solved, Great Aunt Hannah's memory and character will be forever tarnished, the human remains will not be identified, and the murderer will continue to escape justice.
