Great Book For Teachers!

Every year I teach my kindergarten students about families. I can't wait to use this book because of the way it illustrates family traditions. The special necklaces that all three generations have connect the characters in a very special way. It will be a great springboard for asking my students about traditions and special possessions that are passes down in their families. I also like how the Chinese phrases are used throughout the book. Many of my students speak another language at home and will positively identify with Ryan and Robbie. I can't wait to read about Ryan and Robbie's next adventure!

A Rare and Rewarding Find

It's a rare thing to find a book aimed at children that reflects the new realities of the world many of us live in. This new world of multiple cultures and mixed families is the world my children live in and the world their children will live in. Ryan & Robbie are our kids or are our kids friends or simply are the kids living down the street. Understanding them helps us all better understand life - who we are, where we come from, and who we are becoming. This book celebrates the wonderful and real aspects of the new multi-cultural family and society and can teach us all a little bit more about why growing up in this new world can such be a good and great thing. Whatever kind of family you live in or live around, this book reminds us all that staying in tune with our cultural past is the greatest gift - besides love - we can give our kids. Bravo, for bringing this new vision to children (and parents) everywhere!

American Heritage

Ryan and Robbie show kids that they can be American and also proud of their rich heritage. As a first generation immigrant myself and with young child born in the US, this book really strikes a chord. I strongly recommend this book to any family that wants their children to embrace the multicultural experience and lead their way to unique characteristics and personality.

Cool!

It's a beautiful story, with poetic language and impressive illustrations. My two boys and I love it. It does teach them the spirit of teamwork!

A Cultural Adventure

Author Roger Hackett provides a lens into the wonderful world of childhood where the smallest nuances, rather than being overlooked, produce wonder and awe. In the normal course of busy lives, we often don't notice the powerful influence of culture in children's lives. Hackett provides a child's view of these influences and helps both children and parents develop an appreciation not only of other cultures, but of their own. Ryan and Robbie's Bike Ride Adventure will appeal to readers of various ages. For my three-year old, every page offers a story that he relates to, whether it is learning to wink his eye or kicking his soccer ball over the fence. My nine-year old enjoys the quality of the illustrations, the positive messages such as helping others, and the cultural nuances. As a parent, I personally enjoy how Hackett has captured a day in the life of two young children. Reading Ryan and Robbie's Bike Adventure is like watching a home video and reliving those childhood moments. The real charm of the book is that children and parents see themselves in the adventure, which provokes wonder and provides many opportunites for sharing and teaching. Perhaps in a future edition a page of suggested conversation topics and questions could be added to the end of the book. For example, "Mommy, what kinds of things did your grandmother do for you?" In the meantime, parents and children will have no trouble finding thought-provoking ideas in the pages of Ryan and Robbie's Bike Adventure and in their own life's adventure.
