"Rustler's Venom" is the second Jefferson Birch Western novel by W. W. Lee, who is better known as the mystery novelist Wendi Lee. Jefferson Birch is a former Texas ranger who works for Tisdale Investigations. Birch is called to Rattlesnake in the Montana territory to find out who murdered Joe Quinn, who owned a small ranch. Quinn's widow, Mattie, is trying to keep the ranch operating. Two powerful ranchers in Rattlesnake wanted to buy the ranch from Joe Quinn but he refused them. Birch suspects that either Amos Blackiston or Luther Capwell is responsible. Someone kills the ranch's brood bull and burns Mattie's barn down. Then Mattie is framed for rustling horses and put in jail. It is up to Birch to find out who is responsible for trying to put Mattie out of business. This novel is part Western and part mystery. Lee's Westerns take the reader back to the Old West. While there are some minor inconsistencies in the book, they do not take away from the good story. "Rustler's Venom" is recommended.
