VERY highly recommended for military buffs! Having grown up in the '80s, I remember Cold War tensions very well, and the fact that the public at large seemed to be more deeply fascinated by military technology then than today. Just take a look at the action movies of the '80s if you need proof! Soviet vs US what-if scenarios were everywhere in the movies. The first 70+ pages consist of an excellent introduction and discussion of the Soviet philosophy and general organization, followed by a basic yet informative catalog of virtually all the major Soviet weapons from the big ICBMs down to hand held AK-47 rifles. Knowing what we know today makes the musings of the authors in 1981 even more interesting, as we can look back with hindsight, while they were only speculating. A virtual candy store for military history buffs, the best I have seen yet!! Hours of entertainment. Another very highly recommended book in the same general vein but covering the various forces of the world is "Weapons of World World 3" by William J. Koenig, 1981.
