Russian Intelligence Collection Surface Ships (RUMINT)

UPDATE - The Ukrainian drone strike on the Ivan Khurs on March 24, 2024 rendered the ship completely non-combat-ready. Part of the ship's cabin has been demolished, a funnel is completely missing, and the mast that housed the antennas is covered in scaffolding. Equipment is also missing from the stern, and the forecastle deck is covered with camouflage netting. Satellite images showed damage to the stern. Ship is moored in Sevastopol's Tollandia Bay.

Russian intelligence collection surface ship missions include: radio reconnaissance, monitoring the missile defense system of the U.S. Navy, jamming and intercepting radio communications, identifying and classifying different sources of electromagnetic radiation, monitoring marine communications, monitoring enemy fleet activities, monitoring enemy naval exercises, etc. Intelligence collection ships are designated Sudno Svyazyy (SSV, or communications vessel). GS in pennant numbers of some ships is a contraction of gidrograficheskoye (survey ship). Ships designated "CCB" such as ССВ-80 and ССВ-571 "White Sea" number (Беломорье) are "Baltic coast" Number (Прибалтика) ships. The acronym AGI (Auxiliary General Intelligence) refers to Electronic Surveillance Ships. Most of the ships shown here are operated by Russia's Main Directorate of Underwater Research (GUGI) who also operate 'special mission' submarines (which will be a whole other book entirely).
