The story gets better and better....

This series is really taking off for me. Burning Alive drew me into a fantastical world of power and passion, while Finding the Lost carried me even deeper. Running Scared does not rely solely on the passion and lust between the two main characters, but the stronger desire of love and the needs of the community I have become a part of. Shannon Butcher has a way of making each love story significant and special to each particular couple and still imposes the overall importance of love and trust in the mission of the Sentinel Race. And the little details of home and lifestyle are so tantalizing I'm continuously wondering what happens next, even as I finish the final page. I love Shannon Butcher's work.

There's a great deal going on as Lexi stops running - and plenty of promising future pairs in the wi

In the lead are Zach and Lexi whose story we've been waiting on since they met in the first book - in an encounter that left Zach bleeding and Lexi on the run. Zach's finally caught up with Lexi, but it's only because Lexi has a plan to use Zach's apparent obsession for her in order to gain entry to the Sentinel's hidden compound in order to save her 'brainwashed' friend Helen and then to take out the 'evil' Sentinels once and for all. There's a lot going on in this third installment of Butcher's Sentinel Wars. In addition to Lexi and Zach, there are also side threads for future pairs Nika and the almost turned Madoc, as well as Grace and the crippled Torr. Not to mention a prince from another dimension, the secret plans of the Sanguinar( the Sentinel's vampire-like allies), a traitor, and a couple more minor continuing plot lines. With all of that, Running Scared is probably just a little too much of a good thing. Though I must say I that there was more than enough of the cynical Lexi questioning her attraction to Zach, an attraction which she blames on some kind of magical poisoning and her firm belief that she's being brainwashed. Lexi's distrust it serves to make the pair work for their happily-ever-after but it didn't allow for the tension to build as effectively it did with the pairs in previous books. Still over all I did like Running Scared and there is plenty of promise for the future - Nika/Madoc and Grace/Tohr have a great deal of appeal and the cards are not stacked in their favor so they will really have to work for their HEA's - so I am definitely still on board for book 4 Living Nightmare: The Sentinel Wars, out in November of 2010 and maybe if we are lucky Butcher's short in Dark and Stormy Knights(July) will be connected to the Sentinels too. --------------------------------------- If you are new to the series, I really enjoyed the first two books(Burning Alive: The Sentinel Wars, Finding the Lost: The Sentinel Wars). The Sentinels are warriors from another world protecting humans and a gate from monsters. The warriors are immortal and in constant pain because they draw energy from the earth but can't release it unless paired with a female of their species who can channel the energy as magic. Without a compatible female to bleed off the energy build up, the anguished warriors are slowly losing leaves from a magical `tree of life' tattoo which indicate how much time the warriors have left before losing their souls and becoming monsters themselves. Unfortunately, there aren't many females and no more children are being born either, so the hope of salvation is slim.

super romantic urban fantasy

Human Lexi Johns believes that her human friend Helen Day was brainwashed by Drake the Theronai warrior (see Burning Alive) as she knows his species is her worst nightmare. As a child Helen had it drilled into her constantly how deadly dangerous the evil Theronai are; her fears mount as she thinks Zach the Theronai warrior stalks her. She is right about Zach although wrong about his motive. Zach knows she is his bond mate and he wants to persuade her they belong together but hesitates as he knows she loathes his kind. As he considers acceptance of his disastrous fate if he fails to make it with Lexi, they finally meet. However, he is unaware that she has joined his race's enemy the Defenders of Humanity in order to use him to destroy the Theronai encampment. Meanwhile Lexi has second thoughts about the evilness of the Theronai as Zach is kind and caring, but it may be too late to change sides after years of being brainwashed that his kind are the wicked. The latest Sentinel War romantic urban fantasy is a superb fresh entry due to the heroine whose extremism is similar to Helen but deeper into her soul so that unlike Helen, Lexi cannot be labeled a star-crossed lover; while Zach is similar to Drake. Still the key to the saga is that the two other species (besides the humans) seem genuine and their hostilities are exciting. Yet in spite of the cross species war, the fast-paced story line belongs to the human female who puts Pink Floyd meaning to brainwashing once she meets Zach in person. Shannon K. Butcher provides a terrific suspense filled thriller. Harriet Klausner

Fast-paced and well written...

Lexi had been running for a long time, but she'd decided to stop and allow herself to be captured, so that she could save her friend Helen from the Sentinels. Her mother had warned her about the Sentinels, but Lexi knew that if her friend Helen had any chance of escaping them, then Lexi was that chance. She was willing to take the risk. For Helen. Zack had been tracking her for weeks, and it was easy to let him find her. Zack knew Lexi was his life-mate. The problem was convincing her of it. She somehow had gotten the wrong idea about him, and about the Sentinels in general. So when Lexi calls, sounding desperate and alone, Zack doesn't hesitate to rush to her rescue. As soon as Lexi and Zack get together, sparks begin to fly. Author Shannon K. Butcher has created another page-turner in the Sentinel series with RUNNING SCARED (which will be released May 2010). I couldn't wait to receive this book, and I was not disappointed! The plot is fast-paced, the characters are well-written and very real, and the settings are wonderfully detailed. I couldn't put the book down once I'd begun reading, and read the entire book in one sitting. I'll be looking forward to reading the next book in the series, LIVING NIGHTMARE, which will be released in November.
