I am an avid reader of both poetry and fiction, and this is by far some of the best poetry I have ever read. It is impossible to leisurely read just one poem. The day the book arrived, I read the entire book and have since ordered two more books by the same author. If you think you do not like poetry, you haven't read Martina Newberry.
New Vocie in the Land

Running Like a Woman with Her Hair on Fire The words of Martina Newberry flow from one of those faraway but true places where the origins of the universe were hammered out in the forges of an older time... her feelings, her reflections, her passions roll across the printed pages where her truth, like molten rocks flowing from the depths of a volcano, brightly burns or where tenderness floats above the page like a gentle shower of rose petals seeking to soothe hurts that had been. Make no mistake, this lady is not just a gentle spokesperson with a good pen; she also paints the printed page with canon, sword, and fire. Newberry will take you only where a new and untamed voice can take you. I urge you to read Newberry and find new horizons of feeling, emotion, and joy lighting the deeper recesses of your heart.
Beautiful & Intriguing Like the Cover

I've read Ms. Newberry's "Running Like A Woman With Her Hair On Fire" more than once because it's one of THOSE kinds of poetry books. The kind that draw you in with their simple and stunning use of language and hold you with their ability to grab your emotions. I read it straight through first and now I like to randomly open the book to a page and see what I get...it always leads me to something I need to experience in the moment...one of her poignant insights or beautiful pictures of humanity. Thanks for writing it! I look forward to checking out her book "The Banyan and the Alder" next.
Painting with words

Running Like A Woman With Her Hair on Fire is the latest collection of poems by Martina Newberry. Like a painter with her brush, each poem paints strong emotion--each idea comes with a stroke of thought-provoking power. The sad beauty of "On the First Day of October" is written in such a way that the reader can see the words in motion like a moving painting. My favorite in the collection is "James Dean's Shadow." The poem evokes warmth and a subtle pain at the same time. The poet says, regarding shadows, "...I started out with one, then lost it somewhere and it has remained lost, unless, of course, it was found by God and reassigned-the way they reassigned James Dean's shadow after his horrible car accident. You remember. . ." This is a book to be read over and over again. And I will do that.
