Johnny scrambled around the "men with white faces", as they were called. He did his best, darting back and forth to avoid bullets and cannonballs. The loud noises scared Johnny, but no one would know that. A bullet sunk into his shoulder, but he continued on. As he ran, another bullet nicked his ear. Johnny roared in pain. Eagle Talon patted his neck. Another bullet hit Eagle Talon's cheek. He fell to the ground and other warriors whisked him away to safety, where some Indian women would tend to him. Suddenly, Johnny saw a stunning chestnut stallion crashing through the front lines. His rider whipped him furiously. The corners of the horse's mouth bled profusely from the snaffle bit being sawed in his mouth. His neck was lathered in blood.
