Running Back

In March 1976, Steve Heidenreich, a world-class miler and a strong contender for the U.S. Olympic track team, was hit by a car while running at night. He was in a coma for eight days and the surgical team feared that even if he did recover, he might be mentally and physically damaged for life. When he left the hospital after a month of therapy, he had the mental acuity of a two-year-old and walked with extreme difficulty. He had lost a great deal of weight and had a piece missing from his skull, which was later replaced with a steel plate. It took only a month before Heidenreich began to jog slowly again, and one year after the accident he was again running exceptional times for the mile and and was a good bet for the 1980 Olympics.

This is the story of his indomitable will to survive and his courage and determinatioin to come running back.

"Steve's story is a testimonial to the strength, courage, and adaptability of the human spirit."-Jill Kinmont, author of The Other Side of the Mountain
