A gripping apocalyptic thriller about a man and his family running for their lives in an America gone mad--from the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and RecursionNo time to think. No time to ask why. Only time to run. Five days ago, the epidemic of rage began. Four days ago, the rash of senseless murders swept the nation. Three days ago, the president addressed the country and begged for peace--even as the murders increased tenfold. Two days ago, the killers began to mobilize. One day ago, the power went out. And tonight, the killers are reading the names of those to be killed over the Emergency Broadcast System. Jack Colclough is listening over the battery-powered radio on his kitchen table in Albuquerque, and he just heard his name. People are coming to his house to kill him, his wife, his daughter, and his son. He has no idea what's happening, or why, but the time for questions is long past. His only chance is to run. Following an ordinary family on a desperate race through an America that's destroying itself, Run is a terrifying, brutally stripped-down thriller from master storyteller Blake Crouch.
Generally, I am a pretty open minded person who feels that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. For some reason though, when I really enjoy or dislike a book and see reviews to the contrary my personality does a complete flip flop. I want to be like, “Yeah well, your face sucks! Oh yeah, I went there. What you gonna do about it?”
Somehow, I also become an inarticulate, teenage school girl in such situations, as you can see.
By my star rating you can see this was a book I really enjoyed. It was fast paced with an interestingly, original plot (for an apocalyptic book that is).
I also may have appreciated this book because I really felt for our protagonist. One part that stood out to me is when he talks about feeling like a man for the first time. I could totally see this situation bringing on all the stages of emotion this man goes through.
I did feel that the wife was stiff, and kind of boring, though there was one mention of her being completely honest in her infidelity from the beginning that I found to be a nice side note of a character trait. It just seemed that as the husband found himself and his strength reserves she became ever weaker. Which I’m sure would happen to some people, but I was hoping it would show them getting stronger together, not just her depending on him more and more.
I have been known to be of the opinion that when it comes to Mysteries and Thrillers books published in the 80’s and 90’s are where it’s at; this book proved that there are still some really good newer books of the Thriller genre out there.
I have to say what really made this for me was the end. Everything comes around, and Crouch did a beautiful job of tying things up, but still making you give a little “hm”...
Definitely suggested reading for fans of the genre. I will be picking up more by this author in the future.
