Ruhtinattaria: romaani [Finnish]

By Eduard von Keyserling

Behind the cultivated order of aristocratic life, a nearly sixteen-year-old princess is beginning to test the boundaries drawn around her. Marie, youngest daughter of a widowed princess, lives under the pressure of supervision, etiquette, lessons and expectations of marriage. Her secret meetings with the young cadet Felix D hnen offer a tantalising glimpse of experience beyond prescribed duty, while reading and romantic imagination give private shape to her resistance. The surrounding household reveals how deeply rank and obligation govern women's choices. Financial pressures weigh upon Marie's mother, socially arranged engagements define the prospects of her sisters, and marriage hovers between personal desire and dynastic necessity. Rather than treating privilege as freedom, this historical novel examines the constraints within aristocratic domestic life, where emotion must often remain concealed and independence carries consequences within a rigid class hierarchy. Woods and countryside provide a striking counterpoint to cultivated estates, formal interiors and the social world of Karlstadt. Through its realist-psychological focus, the novel sets youthful longing beside the compromises of age, spontaneous life beside imposed order, and private feeling beside public expectation. Marie's struggle is not simply against rules, but against a system that seeks to determine how a young princess should live, love and understand her place. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
