Ruby was the eldest of five children born to Abon and Lucille Bridges. Her family moved to New Orleans when she was four years old, seeking better opportunities. Despite her young age, Ruby spent much of her time caring for her siblings while enjoying simple pleasures like playing jump rope, climbing trees, and playing softball.
In 1960, at just six years old, Ruby's parents responded to a request from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to volunteer her for the integration of New Orleans schools. Though her father initially hesitated, her mother insisted that this step was necessary not only for Ruby but for all African American children seeking equal education.
