Rubàiyàt of Omar Khayyàm

By Edward FitzGerald

"Rub iy t of Omar Khayy m" is a timeless collection of quatrains attributed to the eleventh-century Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayy m. This celebrated work explores the profound mysteries of existence, the fleeting nature of time, and the inevitability of fate. Through evocative imagery and lyrical mastery, the verses invite readers to contemplate the beauty of the present moment, famously advocating for a philosophy of carpe diem-seizing the day amidst the uncertainty of the hereafter.

The poems delve into themes of love, spirituality, and the search for meaning in a world governed by forces beyond human control. Often interpreted as both a celebration of earthly pleasures and a sophisticated mystical allegory, the "Rub iy t of Omar Khayy m" remains one of the most influential works of Eastern literature in the Western world. Its verses resonate with a universal longing for understanding, making it a cornerstone of world poetry that continues to inspire reflection on the human condition. This collection stands as a testament to the enduring power of verse to capture the complexities of the soul and the splendor of life.
