ROUTE TO OMEGA is the account of a spiritual, not a religious, journey, realistic rather than pious, a word the writer considers more harmful than helpful. It begins from the honest premise that most of us remain, to some degree, a mystery even to ourselves.

There is humour here, with light and shade, alongside a candid reckoning with what it means to come to terms with oneself, however late in life that reckoning arrives. David Rees finds people's demand for happiness disconcerting; he believes we should aim first for contentment, and from that, moments of true bliss can follow.

He draws an intriguing connection between God and Infinity, and remains positive throughout, without ever wearing rose-tinted spectacles. Three influences run through the book: Dom Laurence Freeman OSB; the fourteenth-century English mystic Julian of Norwich, with her conviction that "all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well"; and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with his deep laugh.

It is fitting that ROUTE TO OMEGA is itself somewhat scattered, a spiral rather than a straight line, one that circles toward a single destination: peace in body, mind, and spirit.
