Keeping It Real

ROUGH ON RATS AND TOUGH ON CATS by Chris Parker is the story of an odd couple of best friends who will collectively learn several lessons from life experiences. Batman and Nedra grew up together and are now sharing an apartment. Batman, who does not use his real name, is a playa and refuses to go along with the status quo. One minute he is working as a garbage man making trouble for his supervisor who wants to fire him and the next he is given a job making more money in another city department driving big machinery. Nedra is a health care counselor who works with people afflicted with sexually transmitted diseases. Both look at life differently. Nedra has dreams of meeting Mr. Right and living happily ever after. Batman is just looking to enjoy whatever lady he has for the night plus smoke weed to heighten his groove. Nedra is motherly and Batman wastes no time in telling people what he thinks; and that, of course, lands him in trouble. He's savvy enough, however, to know how to get himself out of dilemmas. As life goes on, Nedra thinks she has finally found her knight in shining armor and, believe it or not, Batman thinks he has found a nice ladylove. There is one problem; Batman's love interest is married. As he pursues her, he will come to realize that everything is not what it appears. Nedra's love interest, according to Batman, is too good to be true. When things begin to fall apart for both of them, true friendship will be tested and one will have to rely on the other to save them from incarceration. The author's writing style and descriptive detail of each character was good. The storyline kept my attention and it actually had me talking and fussing with the characters about the problems they were getting themselves into. I would have preferred more detail involving closure around the love interests of Batman and Nedra.
