Collections of short stories by Ernest Haycox appeared even before he died in the fall of 1950. This one came out in March 1950, so acknowledgement of his greatness as a short story writer had already been recognized by many people. Had he lived I think he would have received every great writing award possible. And yes, had he lived a few more years I believe we would be honoring him with the same well deserved respect and reverence as given to others of "high-brow literature". He was that good of a writer. The nine stories in this edition are all classics, published in the most popular magazines of the 1930's and 1940's. Each story has the ability to place you there in the action, to have you sympathize or hate the characters involved, and to move you as you encounter people such as The Inscrutable Man; or Wild Jack Rhett, or Mrs. Benson. Great, great stories.
