Sheer enjoyment -- a hidden gem about a life well-lived

Rose Macaulay's classic works are now mostly ignored, while the attention focuses on her contemporaries Virginia Woolf, Evelyn Waugh, and Graham Greene. But after seeking out her masterpiece "The Towers of Trebizond" and her classic novel of the English Civil War called "They Were Defeated", I knew I had to find out more about this amazing writer. This biography by Jane Emery certainly did not disappoint. It follows Rose Macaulay from her unusual childhood to her adventurous adulthood, while allowing Macaulay's own wit, intelligence, and goodness to shine through in the most engaging way. Macaulay's long-term love affair with Gerald O'Donovan (a now-forgotten leader of the early 20th century Irish revival) as well as her strong Anglo-Catholic spirituality and her return to the Church of England following O'Donovan's death are handled with insight and sensitivity. The life and works of Rose Macaulay are treasures which still reward the reader -- make the effort to seek them out, and you will be infinitely glad you did.
