The author (C. Schwartz) has superbly captured the personalities of the characters she created in the book, Rosalie. The stumbling humor of Frank comes through vividly in the Herr Commandant who is the lovable German officer. The sly wit of Ilona Massey is evident in the leading character, Rosalie, the lovely and enterprising barmaid. The role of Doug, as the ultra confident WWI pilot, could have been played by a young Jimmy Stewart. Read it and you will see that William is definitely Nelson Eddy! This is a romance-adventure story that would make a great movie. There are also several illustrations that help to capture the mood of the story. Read it, the story is delightful!
Excellent reworking of a less than excellent film

I was so happy to finally read this book. If only the film "Rosalie" had been as good! Claire Schwartz has taken the story from the film and altered it to make the characters and situation much more believeable and definitely more interesting. Instead of a West Point student and a princess, we have a pretty barmaid and a music student (who later is a pilot in the war), and instead of an elusive dot on the map called Romanza, we have a very real France. I got this book about a month ago, and didn't go to bed until I'd read the whole thing. I really liked it and recommend it highly.
A Real Treat!
