Romeo & Juliet (1936)
The story has been told many times about two families (the Montagues and Capulets) at odds with each other. A Montague teen, Romeo, crashes a Capulet party. There he meets a Capulet, Juliet, and they fall in love. They are compelled to marry, but only in secret because their families would not approve. As with all tragedies, even the innocent must die.
Leslie and Norma are both too old and too lethargic, yet they remain the best part of this movie. Everyone and their dog seems to be in this production, and most are having trouble looking at the teleprompter. The worst is Andy Devine (Peter), Juliet's nurse's servant; the words come out, but the meaning is different.
You can tell they put a lot of money and time into the project. They did not try to make this just a stage play. There are lush costumes, and they did not cut corners on the dialogue or the number of people.
It is worth watching for a different take on the story. Shakespeare was meant to be watched. Some of the intrigue lies in seeing the interpretation through 1936 eyes.
