The series follows the lives and loves of individuals who lived in 52 B.C.
There is quite a lot of blood and s-e-x to keep us from realizing it is a rehash of “Days of Our Lives.” They even have Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson) playing the Roman version of Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison. I am not saying you should not watch this, but it is hardly history and has no socially redeeming value.
One added plus is the inclusion of Atia of the Julii (Polly Walker), who was exceptional as Caroline Dester in “Enchanted April” (1992).
On the positive side, the costumes, when worn, and the sets are well designed. There are always enough cliffhangers, twists, and turns to surprise the most jaded soap lover. This is a great series to use for marathon viewing. You may even get a little real history thrown in if you know what to look for. Afterward, you can take a cold shower.
Evidently, from the feedback I am getting, I may have been overzealous in giving too many stars, as I thought it could be watchable. Some people just downright do not like this type of trip. Nevertheless, I stand by the rating.
