More than verse by verse commentary

ML-J doesn't get to verse 2 until chapter (sermon) 6; that will give you an idea of his thoroughness. This book is composed of 29 lessons he gave on Friday nights at Westminster Chapel in London. There is very little editing; you can actually get cassettes of the messages and compare. I have the first 5, and they're great to listen to, but the book allows you to take your time and STUDY what ML-J has to say. A lot has changed since 1955, when his series began. Not many current authors will give you this much meat. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones is a strong Calvinist, and I am not, so we don't agree on everything. But this just makes my recommendation more meaningful. Buy it! Read it! Study it! Meditate on it! Pray!A few sentences from Chapter 5: "The object of salvation is to bring us to glorify God. What is sin? It is failure to glorify God...So many people say, 'I cannot feel that I am a sinner, I have never felt it'. That is because they are thinking in terms of sins; if only they saw that sin is really just a failure to glorify God with the whole of their being all the time, they would see that they are terrible sinners."
