It was elevated on 16 December 1743. The current Metropolitan Archbishop of Guatemala is His Excellency, The Most Reverend Archbishop Oscar Julio Vian Morales, S.D.B.; he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on Monday, October 4, 2010 to replace His Eminence, Cardinal Rodolfo Quezada Toruno, who was retiring for reasons of age, having reached the age of 75 at which all bishops must submit their resignations to the Pope.
