Role of SACCOs in improving people's welfare

The government of Rwanda has deployed more efforts and strategies to fight the problem of poverty. Among these strategies, there is sensitizing people and mobilizing them to save and using these savings to start up their own self-help projects that would finally help them come out of this poverty. Different savings and credit cooperatives including UMURENGE SACCOs have been set up to provide the population with cheap and easy means to access themselves to micro credit facilities that may help them to become small village based entrepreneurs. The history of payments is characterized by constant technological and societal change, as well as by increasing indispensability to economic activity. Electronic payment systems have replaced a significant bulk of business transactions as it replaces or augments the swapping of money or goods with the exchange of value through electronic means. A payment system is an important infrastructure of any organization and a well-functioning payment system is not only necessary to facilitate the smooth operation and stability of the payment system but also to limit risks associated with the transactions.
