"Rogue's Gold" is the first of the Jefferson Birch Westerns written by W. W. Lee who is better known as Wendi Lee, the author of the Angela Matelli mysteries. "Rogue's Gold" takes place in Grant's Pass, Oregon. The town was a quiet place with 3 saloons and mining and logging were the major activities that sustained the town. Since there was no bank in Grant's Pass, miners had to take the road to Jacksonville, a town about 6 miles away. Whenever a miner had enough gold to put in the bank, he would travel this road. It seemed that every time they went to Jacksonville they were ambushed by a band of theives and were robbed. Some were even killed. Jefferson Birch, a former Texas ranger and detective for Tisdale Investigations, is called in to help the sheriff in Jacksonville find out who is robbing miners and stagecoaches on the road between Grant's Pass and Jacksonville. He begins to uncover corruption in Grant Pass and realizes that someone knows exactly when a miner will be taking his gold to Jacksonville. This little gem of a novel (only 177 pages) has elements of the Western and mystery with well-drawn characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this little-known novel and look forward to reading the other 5 Jefferson Birch Westerns.
