Book Overview

History speaks from the cloister. Here, the drama of early England is recorded not as legend, but as lived remembrance. Roger of Wendover's "Flowers of History", long associated with the name of Matthew Paris, is a major medieval English chronicle tracing the story of the realm from the coming of the Saxons through to A.D. 1235. In this second volume, the Latin chronicle translation by J. A. Giles opens a window onto the world of the Saxon and Norman kings and the rise of the early English monarchy. Battles, royal successions, omens, and disputes over power appear side by side with the daily concerns of the cloister, offering a vivid sense of church and monastic history in high Middle Ages England. As a primary source for historians and a foundational medieval studies reference, it stands alongside the Anglo Saxon Chronicle and the better-known Matthew Paris chronicles as an indispensable witness to England to the 13th century. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Ideal for anyone fascinated by medieval politics and religion, as well as classic-literature enthusiasts seeking an authoritative translated medieval chronicle, it rewards close study and quiet browsing alike, and belongs in every serious library of English and European history.
