Lots of information besides the basics. Even geologists will learn new things!

I bought a copy for myself and one for a friend for the holiday. The friend sat down and started to read. She kept looking up and saying, "Wow, this is my favorite rock and I never knew this!" or "This book is great!". It actually is a fun and informational book about rocks. Less about identifying all rocks, the author, one of the premier geologists and carbon management specialists in the world, showcases 50 of her favorite rocks and why she loves them. She writes in language that is engaging for adults and good for younger children as they might ask "What does that word mean". As a teacher I know the importance of reading to children at a level above their own reading level. But a smart 6. year old (and. up) will enjoy reading a book just about ROCKS. Almost seems impossible to me, but Dr. Mervine has done it!
