This story is typical of how african american mothers and grandmothers have been throughout the generations. Always time to sooth and offer love.
Amazing debut

Amazing debut by Raymond. Ignore the Kirkus review above. This is a very good book. Deeply moving, always believable. All the minor characters (the nurse, social worker, etc.) are as well drawn as the major ones. The family histories are very involving. The last chapter is the best in a first novel in some time. Please Ms. Raymond, write a second book, soon. This was a great reading experience. Highly recommended
Good Story Well Told

Linda Raymond is a very good story teller. She tells several stories in this one book and they are woven together beautifully. It's about life. It's uplifting. The scenes inside the neonatal intensive care unit are very realistic. I have a background in neonatology and it made me a little homesick for the NICU. Every one of the characters seemed too real to be made up. A wonderful read. Get your hankies out before the end
