Photographer Robert Capa sold his first photograph for publication in the early 1930s. Driven from his home in Germant by burgeoning Nazism, he settled in Paris. There he befriended some notable artists, including Hemingway, Picasso, and Steinbeck. His remarkable photojournalism during the Spanish Civil War brought Capa wide publication; he was increasingly sought after for his brave, compassionate work. His photographs from that war and from World War II are among the best-known images of history. Capa cofounded Magnum Photos, a coperative agency whose members choose their projects and retain the copyright to their work, in 1947.
