On 25 May 2018, the Irish people voted by 66.4% to remove the Eighth Amendment, which had enshrined the equal right to life of the pregnant woman and the unborn. This result, to allow for safe, legal access to abortion in the Republic of Ireland, came after years of grassroots campaigning by individuals and organisations across the country to allow people choice in their medical treatment.
