Fearing loss of power and profit, the cartel targets Provos for murder. Jewel mining villages in the Barraidi interior refusing to acquiesce to cartel demands are destroyed, their people massacred. Provos and Terrin-tie are in the middle of all of it. But they are not helpless, nor are the unexplainable forces that appear to be guiding them.

As Provos' kinsman searches the countryside for him, as a Mirren contingent does the same, Provos and Terrin-tie fight to survive against all odds. Through it all, it is the strength of their love, and the loyalty they have inspired, that help them take those final steps on the perilous Road to Mirren-Bar.
