Cricket Sanders accepted her nurse's degree with the mission of providing patriotic duty in the care of wounded soldiers. She joined the Army, shocked when deployed to Afghanistan. When the military leaves abruptly in the night, stranding her in enemy territory, she's horrified. Cricket feels relieved to find Gunnery Sergeant Jack Davis, a seasoned combatant and master of several local languages, also abandoned with her in the hostile terrain. She plans to walk out of Kabul to safety following him. However, he wants no company. When Cricket eventually persuades him to let her come, she is disappointed by the obstacles she faces from her lack of physical strength.
