Road Atlanta's twelve turn, two and a half mile road course has hosted Can Am's, Formula 5000, Trans Am's, motorcycles and motocross, IMSA GT and SCCA club racing and for many years was the home of the SCCA National Championship runoffs. The first NASCAR Busch series race on a road course took place at Road Atlanta. In 1969, two Lockheed engineers and amateur racers, David Sloyer and Earl Walker, got the idea to build a world class sports car racing facility in North Georgia. Their first location didn't pan out, the second, the current location in Hall County turned out to be a superb choice, David Hobbs called it "the most spectacular road course in the country." When the 1970 Bridgehampton Can Am was cancelled, they acquired the date and thrashed to get the track open, cementing racing opinion that this was a great facility. The track had financial difficulties, not unusual for racetracks, went through a few owners; Arthur Montgomery, the Atlanta beverage distributor, then the notorious Whittington brothers who were eventually prosecuted for using proceeds from smuggling and selling cannabis to fund their racing activities, then the Leon Brothers and then a local group headed by Ardy Arani. Our book ends in 1989, more owners appeared after that and with a few track changes, it's still a great circuit.
