After the devastating loss of her mother to mycosis fungoides, Roni Nicole sought grounding and healing in a rare alluvial forest on a tributary of the Tar River in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. The location known as, Respite in the Round, is situated on 23 acres of Occaneechi Saponi land where nature-based immersion is offered for artists, healers, cultural and frontline organizers taking time for restful resistance.
Roni Nicole spent time reflecting upon her mother, her ancestors, and the land in order to process many complex emotions and wrote poems based on her time there. This living work is a vulnerable, healing step in the dance of grief and a loving homage to her mother.
