Chana's not your typical Idaho girl who happens to live on the Salmon river somewhat removed from civilization. She and her husband are extremely well educated and well read yet they are accepted by their neighbors on the river. This is no mean feat in rural Idaho, a largely anti-education state. There are vivid descriptions of the characters she meets on the river; the chickies and the con-artists and she doesn't mince words about their impact on her life. She and her husband worked very hard and patiently to build a home, a power generation system, a good life on the river and then, in an instant it was gone and she left the river forever. Not what you would expect from a backwoods lady. If you have ever considered going back to nature read this sobering account.
