The term river morphology is used to describe the shapes river channels and how they change over time. The morphology of a river channel is a function of a number of processes and environmental conditions, including the composition and erodibility of the bed and banks, vegetation and the rate of plant growth, the availability of sediment, the size and composition of the sediment moving through the channel, the rate of sediment transport through the channel, and the rate of deposition on the floodplain, banks, bars, and bed. An alluvial river is a lowland river in which the bed and banks are made up of mobile sediment and/or soil. A bedrock river is a river that typically has little to no alluvium mantling the bedrock over which it flows. A bedform is a depositional feature on the bed of a river. This book studies river morphology including valley, river delta, base level, erosion, oxbow lake, and stream pool.
