All this is offset by the support of her soft-hearted mother, by her chef father's humour - delightfully down-to-earth and often irreverent - and especially by the friendship and teen-antics of fun-loving Ruthie. Death comes to the Hughs family and challenges the strength of Annie's faith. At age seventeen she turns to the longed-for profession of nursing ... and then falls in love.
