A semi-fictional portrayal of the post-war provincial life of a large family before the advent of excess commodities and the sometimes-negative influence of television. The story is viewed from the perspective of Annie Hughs as she grows up immersed in the rough and smooth of home and village life and struggles to obey the Ten Commandments. She enjoys the fun, but weathers the pranks of five brothers, resists the taunts of "Big-head", the local bully and rebels against the domination of Sister Agatha. All this is offset by the support of her soft-hearted mother, by her chef father's humour - delightfully down-to-earth and often irreverent - and especially by the friendship and teen-antics of fun-loving Ruthie. Death comes to the Hughs family and challenges the strength of Annie's faith. At age seventeen she turns to the longed-for profession of nursing ... and then falls in love.
