When I first met with Marcus Balewa in New York, We both knew that we would take a long walk together on a path, ranges across time and space to tell an incredible story within a story. It was a real drama, featuring culture, history, art, verse, myth despair, addiction, humor, redemption, faith, love and so much more besides; a truly incredible experience, chockfull of fascinating facts which only needed a writer's heart. Considering the things I had been through, people I had met, places I had been in the years of my writing and film making career, Marcus Balewa was just sitting there as a unique statute, talking about his life in such an expression of simplicity but there was a blade at his heart, a kind of suffering, and an awareness of that suffering.
