In the novel, we meet Ruf, a young man who struggles with insecurity and sleepless nights, but who in mountain climbing finds peace and freedom, until one day he finds a strange hole in the floor of a cave and is struck with inexplicable existential fear.

He and a group of ordinary and unusual characters are drawn into a frightening and strange course of events where promises are mixed with threats and feeling lost and confused is often the reasonable reaction. Those who are drawn in struggle both against a looming threat and with their place in the world, as well as with their relationships to each other.
