Book Overview

Navy SEAL K-9 handler Beau "Danger" Maddox is at the top of his game-until an op goes south, leaving him physically and mentally scarred. Separated from the Navy, he's determined to requalify as operational and get back in the action so he can take down the deadly South American cartel that killed his team. The last thing he needs is a distraction in the form of a beautiful new neighbor and her dog...

Trafficking survivor Paisley Reyna became a trauma counselor to help others after a harrowing captivity at the hands of the notorious Guerrero Cartel. When she unexpectedly inherits her cousin's home and retired military working dog, Riot, she seizes the chance to eke out a quiet life in a small town in Texas. However, the Dutch shepherd upends her plans, destroys her belongings, and repeatedly escapes next door to the intense former SEAL, who poses a threat to her peace-and maybe even her heart.

When the local sheriff asks for Danger's expertise and Paisley's dog to intercept a trafficking deal, they're quickly caught up in a battle against the very cartel that marked both their souls. Along with a paramilitary team, they plunge deeper and deeper into the Venezuelan jungle-all too aware that making it out alive a second time will take nothing short of a miracle.

Explosive

God has a way of putting the right people in your path just when you need them. Paisley is a trauma counselor helps others that were trafficked like her. She inherits Riot from her cousin but has no idea how to control an RMWD. Danger is a retired Navy Seal dog handler dealing with PTSD and lives next door. Through A Breed Apart Danger trains Paisley to handle Riot and they work together to bring down the leader of a Venezuelan drug cartel that is responsible for human trafficking. The scenes where Paisley talks Danger through his PTSD are very well done especially with the spiritual truths she shares with him. I liked the new characters to the series and that we get to reconnect with some of the A Breed Apart characters from previous books. Another great action packed, edge of your seat, inspirational read.

Action packed adventure

Man, that was some fun! Overflowing with adrenaline, fast-paced action, and intense strategy to bring down the bad guys, the book starts in high gear and doesn’t wind down until the very end. Kudos to author JJ Samie Myles on a job well-done on her debut novel. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! Beau was an amazing hero and warrior - battle-scarred yet still wanting to right the wrongs, haunted by his past yet working to overcome his demons and addictions, hurting yet protective and fiercely loyal. Paisley was an admirable heroine as well - compassionate and loving even when it’s difficult, brave even when facing crippling fear. Beau and Paisley both struggle with PTSD when they re-enter Venezuela and it was somewhat difficult to read about what they both suffered through and how they escaped the first time around. Still, there were poignant moments of reconciliation and forgiveness, as well as great romantic scenes. But, of course, the real hero of the book was Riot and I loved this dog’s intelligence, work ethic, boundless energy, and unswerving loyalty. If you love military-esque action and suspense, this book is a must read. Action-packed from the Start

Riot is another action-packed suspense story that features a military working dog as a focal character. For me, the dogs are the most interesting characters in the stories. I worry about them more than the humans. Much of this story takes place in the jungle, which ramps up the tension. You never know what’s around the next tree. The hero and heroine are after a leader in a vicious cartel who has caused them harm. Ultimately, Riot is a story about forgiveness and redemption. If you like military operation storylines, you’ll enjoy this book. While it is a part of a series, and a few characters from previous books make a cameo, you can read this as a standalone and not miss anything.
