Deputized college students Vera and Rigby are just settling into their new roles as officers under Sheriff Bart "Breaker" Caldwell. They've learned to navigate the department's old-fashioned equipment and techniques, but they're caught off guard when an early morning call brings them to the site of a callous attempted murder. The scene has been scrubbed, and the man who was shot is lying in a medically-induced coma.
